The rain had followed Mara all the way from the harbour, and it found her again at the gate of Harrowgate, where Tobias stood waiting with the brass key and no umbrella.
“You’re late,” Tobias said. Mara shook the water out of her hair and did not answer. The key was colder than it should have been, and heavier, as if the house had already decided something about her.
Nineteen winters earlier, Tobias had stood at this same gate with the same key, twenty-five and soaked through. The old keeper had given him one rule and no reasons: never let the upstairs clock stop.
Inside, Harrowgate smelled of candle wax and old paper. Somewhere upstairs a clock was counting the wrong hours. Mara counted along under her breath until Tobias told her to stop.
- Right-click “Mara” → Create New → Character
- Link her other mentions from the Janitor tab
- Select a sentence about her → Append Description
- Click Tobias in the flashback (blue bar) to meet him at 25
